In France, and for French people around the world, July 14 is celebrated as Bastille Day, the beginning of a revolution that freed the citizens from a tyrannical government. In the late 1700s, the Bastille was used as a state prison, holding mostly political dissidents. On July 14, 1789, a crowd stormed the Bastille and released seven prisoners.

This historic event is commemorated every year with parades, fireworks, and the invoking of the words of the French Revolution: Liberté, égalité, fraternité – freedom, equality, and brotherhood!

Join Lafayette Village Saturday, July 13, 2013 for a celebration of French liberty and culture. From noon until 10 pm, live, French-inspired music will be heard throughout the Village. Visit our many shops and restaurants for French-themed promotions, food and drinks. Then join us in the evening as a large group of local Francophones (did you know there are an estimated 3000 in the Triangle area?) lead us into dance for the Lafayette Village version of a French Ball.

L’Ecole French School of Raleigh is partnering with Lafayette Village for Bastille Day celebrations. L’Ecole provides young children of the Triangle full immersion French language and socialization classes. They strive to help children become bilingual or improve upon their existing French language fluency, using a combination of proven academic methods, social and cultural activities. www.lecoleraleigh.org. Stop by the booth during the festivities to learn more about the school and how you can be a part of it. And become a fan on Facebook for all the up-to-date details!
